MALINAU OUD / AGARWOOD

One of the most legendary and highly sought-after types of wild agarwood in the world, prized for its superior aromatic quality and resinous heartwood. Naturally produced by the *Aquilaria malaccensis* species in the remote forests of Malinau Regency, North Kalimantan, this agarwood forms as a protective response by the tree to natural microbial or fungal infections over the course of several decades. Key Characteristics of Authentic Wild Harvested Malinau Agarwood A Distinctive and Sophisticated Aroma: Unlike agarwood from other regions, authentic wild-harvested Malinau agarwood possesses an exceptionally smooth (sweet-woody), luxurious, and elegant oud scent that is long-lasting. When burned, the aroma is neither pungent nor acrid. Formation of Natural (Wild) Resin: Resin—or *gubal*—forms exclusively through natural infection within the forest; it is not the result of human intervention, such as artificial injection (inoculation). A Unique, World-Class Scent Profile (Distinctive Drydown): Unlike oud oils from other regions—which often lean toward an overly sharp, smoky, or pungent ("barnyard") character—authentic wild-harvested Malinau oud oil possesses a remarkably rich aromatic profile. It opens with clear, wild, woody, and smoky notes, before transitioning (during the drydown) into a delicate, honey-like or caramel sweetness, interwoven with the natural, fresh essence of a forest after the rain.
Unadulterated Purity (100% Pure): These authentic forest-derived products are distilled using traditional or manual methods, with no added alcohol, preservatives, carrier oils (such as DPG), or any other synthetic chemicals. Consequently, these oils are perfectly safe for use on sensitive skin, for therapeutic aromatherapy, or as fragrances for religious observances.

DAMAR RESIN

It is a prominent Non-Timber Forest Product (NTFP) harvested directly from the natural exudates of wild trees—primarily those belonging to the Dipterocarpaceae family (such as the *meranti* group) and the genus *Agathis* (e.g., *Agathis dammara*). This resinous fluid is secreted naturally as a defense mechanism whenever the tree's bark is injured; it subsequently hardens upon exposure to the air, forming solid crystalline lumps on the tree trunk or on the ground surrounding the roots.
Classification of Damar Resin Types from Bornean Forests
In the remote forest regions of North Kalimantan, local communities generally categorize wild *damar* (natural resin) into several primary types based on quality, color, and how it is formed: • *Damar Mata Kucing* ("Cat’s Eye" Resin, also known as *Damar Kaca* or "Glass" Resin): This is the highest-quality variant. It is clear and transparent, or a pale, crystalline yellow. Its defining characteristic is its ability to reflect light with a shimmer reminiscent of a cat’s eye. This type of resin holds significant economic value for export.
Damar Batu: This variant is formed from the remnants of resin from ancient meranti trees that fell and remained buried in the ground for years, eventually becoming fossilized. It is harvested by local people who dig into the soil around the stumps or roots of old trees. It tends to be darker in color, opaque, and hard in texture; it is widely exported as a large-scale industrial commodity.
Yellow/Golden Damar: Freshly tapped damar resin with a golden-yellow color. It is of medium quality and is typically cleaned of any remaining tree bark before being processed.
